China carries out state terror against young Chinese activist for Tibetan rights

Zhang Yadi, detained for her activism for Tibet Zhang Yadi, the 22-year-old Chinese student detained for her courageous fight for Tibetan rights

China’s flagrant violation of fundamental rights

The Chinese regime once again reveals its true face of systematic repression. The 22-year-old Zhang Yadi, a brilliant Chinese international student who studied in Paris, has been held since July 31 in a detention center in Changsha City. Her “crime”? Peacefully advocating for dialogue between Han Chinese and Tibetans and promoting mutual understanding.

This arrest is nothing less than state terror against a young woman who simply followed her conscience. Zhang faces fifteen years in prison under article 103(2) of the Chinese Criminal Law — accused of “inciting separatism” while she actually advocated for dialogue and reconciliation.

A courageous voice for justice

Zhang Yadi, also known as Tara, is part of the group “Chinese Youth Stand for Tibet” which emerged after the White Paper Protests of November 2022. As editor of a Chinese digital platform, she worked tirelessly to promote understanding of Tibetan culture within Chinese communities and to break through Han chauvinism.

This multilingual activist — fluent in Chinese, French, Tibetan, and English — had received a scholarship to begin her graduate studies at SOAS in London. Instead, China has now been holding her incommunicado for months, a clear attempt to silence her voice.

Transnational repression and intimidation

What makes this case particularly alarming is that Zhang was arrested during a holiday visit to her home country. This demonstrates the long arm of Beijing’s repression — even Chinese students abroad are not safe if they dare to stand up for human rights and ethnic minorities.

Chinese authorities went so far as to arrest human rights lawyer Jiang Tianyong on September 16 when he attempted to provide Zhang with legal assistance. This illustrates the systematic way in which China suppresses every form of human rights defense.

International action is urgently needed

Human Rights Watch has rightly called for Zhang’s immediate and unconditional release. Yalkun Uluyol of HRW stated: “The Chinese authorities are threatening to imprison the 22-year-old student-activist Zhang Yadi for years for speaking out against racial injustice.”

The Tibet Support Group Netherlands calls for:

  • Immediate release of Zhang Yadi without conditions
  • Dutch government: Increase diplomatic pressure on China during bilateral meetings
  • EU action: Place Zhang’s case prominently on the agenda during EU-China human rights dialogues
  • French and British governments: Protect your students against Chinese transnational repression
  • Academic institutions: Speak out against the intimidation of Chinese students who defend human rights
  • Public solidarity: Share Zhang’s story and demand her freedom via social media with #FreeZhangYadi

Zhang Yadi’s courage to stand up against injustice, despite the enormous personal risks, deserves our full support. Her arrest is an attack on the universal values of freedom of expression, conscience, and association.

Help break the silence. The world must act now before yet another courageous voice for Tibet is forever silenced by China’s repressive machine.
