Human Rights Defenders Richardson and Monlam Receive Prestigious Snow Lion Award for Tibet Advocacy

In Berlin, the International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) presented the prestigious Snow Lion Human Rights Award to Dr. Sophie Richardson and Geshe Lobsang Monlam. This recognition, worth EUR 3,000, marks a crucial moment in the struggle against the systematic oppression that China has carried out in Tibet for decades.

ICT Chairman Richard Gere personally presented the distinction to both human rights defenders during a ceremony honoring their courage and determination. For Gere, who has served as ICT chairman for 30 years, this award symbolizes the unyielding fight against the Chinese authorities who continue to oppress Tibet.

Richardson: Voice Against Chinese Impunity

Dr. Sophie Richardson, former China director of Human Rights Watch, has exposed the flagrant human rights violations in Tibet for nearly two decades. Her work around the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing was groundbreaking: she documented how Chinese security forces shot unarmed Tibetan protesters, arbitrarily arrested thousands, and systematically tortured them.

“Tibetans have shown resilience in their fight for fundamental human rights — the ability to live their identity, faith, language, culture, and traditions without fear,” Richardson said at the ceremony. Her words strike home at a time when China is intensifying its cultural genocide in Tibet.

ICT President Tencho Gyatso praised Richardson’s “fearlessness and her deep sense of responsibility toward the people whose stories she tells.” These are not empty words: Richardson has testified in numerous Congressional hearings about Chinese terror in Tibet, repeatedly piercing through Chinese propaganda.

Monlam: Digital Resistance Against Cultural Erasure

Geshe Lobsang Monlam receives the award for his monumental work on the Great Tibetan Dictionary — a 223-volume encyclopedia containing more than 360,000 words — and the Monlam AI project. These are not academic projects, but essential weapons in the fight against China’s attempt to erase the Tibetan language.

China has waged an aggressive sinicization campaign in Tibet over the past decades, forcing Tibetan children to receive education in Chinese and systematically suppressing the use of the Tibetan language. Monlam’s work provides concrete tools to keep the Tibetan language alive and pass it on to future generations.

“We must find a way for our language and culture to survive in this rapidly changing world,” Monlam said upon receiving the award. His Monlam AI platform, launched in 2023, offers free machine learning tools for the Tibetan language, including translation, optical character recognition, and speech technology.

Call to Action

The granting of these awards underscores the urgency of the situation in Tibet. While Richardson and Monlam are being honored for their work, China continues to violate human rights with impunity and systematically destroy Tibetan culture.

Tibet Support Group Netherlands calls on the Dutch government to:

  • Impose concrete sanctions against Chinese officials responsible for human rights violations in Tibet
  • Exert diplomatic pressure within the EU framework to hold China accountable
  • Fund projects that contribute to the preservation of the Tibetan language and culture
  • Invite the Dalai Lama for an official state visit, despite Chinese threats

The recognition of Richardson and Monlam is not just a tribute to their courage — it is an urgent call to the international community to finally take action against Chinese oppression in Tibet.
