As every year, Tibetans all over the world celebrate the birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. In the Netherlands too we pause to reflect on his exceptional significance as a spiritual leader, a symbol of non-violence and a tireless advocate of compassion, peace, freedom and human dignity.

The Dalai Lama is remarkable because, despite exile and the suffering of the Tibetan people, he has always held fast to the power of compassion, dialogue and non-violent resistance. His message is meaningful not only for Tibetans, but inspires people everywhere to contribute to a more peaceful and more humane society.

Closing of the Year of Compassion

With this festive afternoon we also bring to a close the special Year of Compassion, celebrated worldwide in honour of his 90th birthday and his lifelong contribution to compassion, peace and hope. The Year of Compassion was inaugurated by the Tibetan government in exile in July 2025 and ran for a full year — up to the 91st birthday on 6 July 2026.

Come together for compassion, peace and hope, and celebrate the Dalai Lama’s 91st birthday with us at Dam Square in Amsterdam. The programme features music, inspiring contributions, singing together and, of course, birthday cake.

With performances and contributions by, among others

Namgyal Lhamo The nightingale of Tibet

Douwe Hoitsma The heart of education

To conclude: singing together and birthday cake!
